Description	Two unidentified screw steamers lie at the Mystic Iron Works wharf, Pistol Point, Mystic. The new vessel closest to the wharf, seen in port bow view, is possibly the A.J. Ingersoll, and is in the process of being fitted, her boiler having been installed and her masts stepped. The sheerlegs can be seen behind her, and on the other side of the wharf, a schooner is moored. Pine Hill on Masons Island can be seen in the background. The outboard screw steamer to the right of the new vessel is in the process of being overhauled and is partially rerigged. To the right, across the Mystic River, the side-wheel steamer W.W. Coit can be seen.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Mystic Iron Works, 1862-1873, manufactured and fitted engines and boilers for vessels. Its boom period was during and immediately after the Civil War when it fitted and refitted a number of vessels. The company also built one vessel, the iron-hulled screw towboat Montaines. The screw steamer A.J. Ingersoll was built (1866) and for a short time owned in part by Charles Mallory & Sons of Mystic. She spent most of her career in China and was lost at sea in 1874. The W.W. Coit was built by George Greenman & Co. in 1864, and her machinery manufactured at the Reliance Machine Co. in Mystic. She served in the Civil War and later operated between Sag Harbor, Greenport (Long Island) and New York City. She burned to the waterline in 1893 in Washington, D.C. The Charles Mallory & Sons shipyard was located on the east (Stonington) bank of the Mystic River, approximately on the site of the present duPont Preservation Shipyard at Mystic Seaport. It produced a number of sail and steam vessels from 1851 to 1875, with the Civil War period the most active. George Greenman and Company was a family firm owned by three ot the Greenman Brothers, George, Clark and Thomas. They built 97 vessels between 1837 and 1878. The shipyard was located at Adams Point in the Greenmanville section of Mystic, a site that is now part of Mystic Seaport. Pine Hill was on the north end of Masons Island, and was reduced by quarrying by the end of the nineteenth century. Taken by Everett A. Scholfield, a professional photographer who worked primarily in Mystic and New London from 1865-1913. Collodian glassplate negative.
