was
built
by
Maxson
Fish
&
Co
. of
West
Mystic
, and
launched
in
December
1868
. She
first
sailed
in the
California
Line
and
later
out
of
Boston
before
being
converted
to a
schooner-rigged
coal
barge
in
1886
. She was
one
of
many
vessels
that
fell
victim
to a
November
1898
weather
phenomenon
that
struck
southeastern
New
England
that
is
known
as the "
great
Portland
Gale
" for a
passenger
steamer
also
lost
in the
storm
.
Maxson
,
Fish
&
Co
. was
established
in
1853
by
William
Ellery
Maxson
and
Nathan
G
.
Fish
of
Mystic
,
together
with
other
partners
. The
yard
was
located
in
West
Mystic
. The
business
went
bankrupt
in
1870
,
soon
after
Fish's
death
.
