Description	Starboard bow view of the oyster sloop Tiger on shore at South Norwalk, apparently in a boatyard. "TIGER" is visible on the sloop's bow. Another boat can be seen on the left. A number of boats appear to be in the water in the background. View appears to be looking toward a river or inlet beyond which a shoreline is visible.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Tiger was a sandbagger sloop designed by C. Smith and built by John Richards in Norwalk, 1869. Built as a racing yacht, she was later converted to an oyster sloop. Tiger was once owned by Francis Bradbury of Bridgeport, Conn., and once raced against the sandbagger Bella for a purse of $50,000. Racing sandbaggers was a popular sport at the time Tiger was built. Crew numbers, augmented by sandbags, offset the substantial amount of sail used to gain speed without capsizing while racing. Oystering was an important Connecticut industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. New Haven and South Norwalk were among the centers of local and regional cultivation and harvesting. The peak period was 1885-1910. Snapshot.
