Description	Port view of the Providence Line steamer Connecticut stranded on the beach at Fields Point, Providence River, at low tide. A group of women, some wearing straw hats and shirtwaists, can be seen on the beach to the left.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Connecticut, built 1889 by Robert Palmer & Sons of Noank and retired in 1913, was one of a fleet of steamers owned by subsidiary companies of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, connecting New York and Providence and points beyond. The largest wooden-hulled vessel in Sound service, Connecticut was speedy and elegant, but proved unreliable as her oscillating steam engine was subject to breakdowns. She ended up being a relief boat. Her pilot house & front cabins below were turned into a two-story office building in Salem, Massachusetts and her hull into a barge. The Palmer family's shipbuilding and repair facility, in operation from the mid-19th century until 1914, was one of the most prominent on the east coast. It was incorporated under several names, including R. & J. Palmer, Robert Palmer & Sons, and Robert Palmer & Son Shipbuilding and Marine Railway, and experienced substantial growth in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in the production of utilitarian barges and floats.
