Description	A group of workers are apparently in the process of sawing the holding strips prior to launching a large vessel identified as probably the S.S. Gildersleeve. Two men wearing straw hats stand in the right foreground in front of the roped-off launching area. A draped flag is partially visible on what appears to be a platform in front of them. Handwritten at bottom: "Sawing the holding strips."
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. The S.S. Gildersleeve was built by the Gildersleeve Ship Construction Company, and is listed as a United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation vessel, acquired on October 10, 1919. The Emergency Fleet Corporation was formed ten days after the United States entered World War I in 1917. It was commissioned to build, equip, maintain and operate merchant vessels. Established as S. Gildersleeve and Sons, ca. 1821, the company became Gildersleeve Shipbuilding Company in 1908. Its name was changed to Gildersleeve Ship Construction Company, ca. 1917. The company remained active until 1932, by then also building icehouses and other structures. Dates for launching of the Gildersleeve are variously given as 1917 and 1918. Probably located in the Gildersleeve section of Portland.
