Doric
columns
and
pilasters
on a
high
basement
.
Utility
poles
and
wires
line
the
streets
. There
appears
to be
snow
in the
gutters
in the
background
. The
two
posts
in the
right
foreground
are
probably
hitching
posts
.
Inscribed
on
back
: "The
old
'City
Hall'
facing
Market
Street
with
Kingsley
St
. or
Kinsley
St
.
/
on the
south
side
and
Temple
(formerly
Theater
St.)
street
on
/
the
north
side
, was
built
for
city
government
purposes
in
/
1834
by
Samuel
Belcher
and
Genl
.
William
Hayden
/
On the
south
side
in
basement
was
'lock
up'
for
persons
/
arrested
by the
constables
of
which
the
city
had
two
,
both
/
old
men
. The
remainder
of the
basement
was
used
by
/
different
parties
as a
meat
market
. The
floor
above
was
/
used
for the
different
courts
and the
city
council
.
/
The
third
floor
was a
large
hall
for
public
uses
and
/
for
many
years
the
only
hall
of any
size
. The
building
/
will
now
soon
be
torn
down
(May
1897)
,
it
is
used
for
/
police
court
and
police
purposes
. This
view
is
taken
of the
northeast
corner
(Temple
&
Market
St.)
