Description	Starboard bow view of the ship Annie M. Smull at Mallory shipyard, Holmes Street, Mystic. Partially visible behind the ship at left is the sidewheel steamer Ella. The schooner yacht Foam can be seen in stern view in the left foreground.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. The Annie M. Smull was built for Charles Mallory by Charles Mallory & Sons in 1868. It was named for his deceased daughter. She was built for the China trade, but made a number of voyages to Europe. She was nearly lost in the great Blizzard of 1888. Her last owners (1890) were Norwegian. She was lost with all hands in 1906. Ella was built by Charles Mallory & Sons of Mystic, 1864. She was chartered by the War Department during the Civil War. From 1871-1903, she ran between Norwich and Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Foam was built by R. & J. Palmer of Noank in 1863. The Charles Mallory & Sons shipyard was located on the east (Stonington) bank of the Mystic River, approximately on the site of the present duPont Preservation Shipyard at Mystic Seaport. It produced a number of sail and steam vessels from 1851 to 1875, with the Civil War period the most active. The Palmer family's shipbuilding and repair facility, in operation from the mid-19th century until 1914, was one of the most prominent on the east coast. It was incorporated under several names, including R. & J. Palmer and Robert Palmer & Son Shipbuilding and Marine Railway, and experienced substantial growth in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in the production of utilitarian barges and floats. Photograph attributed to Everett A. Scholfield, a professional photographer who worked primarily in Mystic and New London from 1865-1913. Date based on dating of near-identical image. Lower right corner of negative broken and missing.
