Description	Sandbagger sloop, possibly the Mystic-built Annie, getting ready to jibe off Execution Rocks, Manhasset Bay. No boommkin is visible, and the competitor is unidentified. Written at far right in pencil is "Sandbagger sloops/ Larchmont YC/ off Execution". At bottom center is a red-bordered label "Sandbagger/ Sloops/ L.I. Sound/ c. 1885".
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Annie was modeled by D.O. Richmond and built in his boatyard, 1880, for Henry Tift of Mystic and Tifton, Georgia. Racing sandbaggers was a popular sport at the time Annie was built. Crew numbers, augmented by sandbags, offset the substantial amount of sail used to gain speed without capsizing while racing. Annie raced in Long Island Sound and Florida in her early years and later became a working craft. She was modified and rebuilt at various times in her career. Annie was donated to Mystic Seaport in 1931 by Dr. C. K. Stillman.She remains a floating exhibit. David O. Richmond established his yard along Water Street in the late 1860's. He had started out as a ship carpenter and gained a reputation as a designer and builder of smaller vessels. He had a long working relationship with Charles Henry Mallory. Richmond's boatbuilding business endured into the early twentieth century.
