was
built
by
Robert
Palmer
&
Sons
in
1908
as a
steam
towboat
. Her
original
name
was
Henry
G
.
Crew
. The
renamed
boat
had a
series
of
New
York
City
owners
through
1939
. The
Palmer
family's
shipbuilding
and
repair
facility
, in
operation
from the
mid-19th
century
until
1914
, was
one
of the
most
prominent
on the
east
coast
.
It
was
incorporated
under
several
names
and
experienced
substantial
growth
in the
second
half
of the
19th
century
,
specializing
in the
production
of
utilitarian
barges
and
floats
. At the
time
depicted
in this
view
, the
yard
employed
400
men
on
average
.
Merritt-Chapman
&
Scott
Corporation
is
a
marine
engineering
,
construction
and
salvage
firm
formed
in
1922
when
Merritt
&
Chapman
Derrick
&
Wrecking
Company
merged
with
T.A
.
Scott
Company
of
New
London
.
