CHO in the Classroom

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. Imagine what you can do with thousands of pictures! These are the substance of Connecticut History Online (CHO), which reveals family and community life and the ways in which Connecticut people worked, traveled, educated and enjoyed themselves from the mid-nineteenth through the mid-twentieth century. This century of social, economic, environmental, and technological change is documented through thousands of images that can be used to discover Connecticut’s and the nation’s past and also develop skills of observation, analysis and critical thinking.

What is Connecticut History Online?

Connecticut History Online is a collection of Connecticut-related images of people, places and other subjects from the early nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Each primary source image is accompanied by a record that provides basic information such as the date, place, “creator” (photographer, engraver or other source) and subject(s). This information allows you to search for images in many different ways using the CHO online database. Just as you might use your local or school library online catalog to search for a book, video or other item, you can use the CHO online catalog to locate an image and also view that image and the information related to it.

This section of the Connecticut History Online site provides basic information, lessons, activities and other resources to help teachers and students use Connecticut History Online as a window to the past and tool for discovery and understanding.
